Welcome to Scrinium

Portuguese Medieval Translations (and with a humanist nature)

You have reached the web page Scrinium, a free database that gathers information on remaining Portuguese translations of texts written in Latin during the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Scrinium was, from antiquity to the Middle Ages, a box or closet where many texts were kept. Today, this other box, interactive, keep the essential data from various texts, registering essential information for posterity.

This database was born of the post-doctoral research project in Historical Linguistics calld ‘Entre o Latim e o Português: estudo de traduções medievais’, written by Mafalda Maria Leal de Oliveira e Silva Frade (CLUNL - - Centro de Linguística da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa).

This project, funded by the Fundação para Ciência e a Tecnologia (SFRH / BPD / 47528/2008), proposed to deepen the knowledge of medieval translations of Latin texts, contributing to the further development of research related with the remaining testimonies of medieval Portuguese, particularly with regard to their recovery as sources for diachronic linguistic studies. In pursuit of this goal, we intended to constitute a textual corpus of remaining translations of Latin texts, characterizing it from objective and well-defined criteria. The research focuses on texts until the year 1536, when it is published the first grammar in Portuguese (Fernão de Oliveira, 'Grammatica Portuguese lingoagem'), which is a sign of stabilization of the Portuguese language.

This corpus gave rise to this database, which aims to provide researchers for a set of initial data to facilitate the investigation at various levels.
