Characterization

Epigram dedicated to the death of the Latin poet Albio Tibullus.

Domitius Marsus  was contemporary of Virgil, Horace and Tibullus and belonged to the circle of Maecenas. He stood out for several works, among which we find epigrams. José Justo Escalígero (a sixteenth-century author), in Fragmentum Cuiacianum Scaligeri et excerpta Perrei siue Petrei considered him the author of this epitaph, which can be found in the incipit of Vita Tibulli, a biography written by Suetonius (Paratore 1983: 475; Albrecht 1997: 823-824; Kenney / Clausen, 1989: 525). According the Codex Ambrosianus and the Codex Vaticanus, this biography comes at the end of the work of Tibullus the Corpus Tibullianum being preceded by this epigram, dedicated to the death of the poet.

First century BC

Extant witnesses

In Portugal there are four printed copies of the work of Tibullus, all of them connected with the edition of Bernardino Veronese (Tarrío, 2005: 167-186), so it is possible that the epigram was translated from one of them. They are in the following libraries:

- Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa, Inc. 751 (microfilme F.R.75);

- Biblioteca da Ajuda, sala E 48-X-19;

- Biblioteca Pública Municipal do Porto, Inc. 228;

- Biblioteca Pública de Évora, Inc. 599.
